3 tips to help you if you’re divorcing a narcissist

Going through a divorce isn’t a quick or easy process for most people. The situation can become even more complex if the person you’re divorcing is a narcissist. A narcissist’s nature, which is incredibly self-absorbed and control-seeking, can make the divorce even more challenging.

A narcissist will often become angry and lash out when they feel they aren’t in control. At that point, they may begin to twist the trust in ways they think show their side of the story. They may become upset if anyone questions what they say. As you’re going through a divorce with a narcissist, it may be beneficial to remember these three tips:

1. Keep proof of everything

Because you may have to show that the narcissist isn’t being truthful, it’s best to keep proof of everything related to the divorce. This may include receipts from paying for things or documentation about conversations with them.

2. Stay emotionally detached

Many narcissists thrive on being able to invoke emotions from others. Being able to detach and not show any emotion when you’re dealing directly with them is often beneficial in these matters. Try to think logically instead of allowing emotions to rule in these cases.

3. Plan for delays

One tactic that narcissists use is to try to manipulate the divorce by dragging it on. They assume this is going to ruin you financially and that they can control that. If you take the time to plan for a long battle at the start of the divorce, it may make it easier as you’re going through it.

Working with someone familiar with divorce and the circumstances may be beneficial. They can help you to learn your options and remain logical through this process. This may make it easier for you to make decisions in your best interest.
